Why
Ventilate?
-
People
typically spend a large percentage of their time
indoors.
-
Condensation
-
Mould
(May be hidden)
-
Health
hazard to people and structure
-
The
correct balance of heating, insulation and ventilation
can control condensation.
-
Additional
hazards as listed below.
|
|
|
|
Older New
Zealand houses were built with natural ventilation around the
windows, doors and through other poorly sealed areas in the house.
This causes a cold draughty house. New houses are designed to block
out natural infiltration of air to give a relatively draught free
house. (Without ventilation a byproduct is condensation.) |
Additional
Hazards.
There are also other reasons
for adding trickle ventilation to a home.
- Smoke. Smoking in a house
gives off many toxins.
- Volatile organic
compounds (VOCs) cleaners, paints, varnish, cosmetics to
name but a few.
- pet smells or general
stagnation smells from a locked up house
- Cooking smells.
- Moisture causing
condensation leading to mould.
- Radion. (Natural cancer
causing gas given off by the decay of radium in the soil)
|
With
tighter houses condensation will occur as moist air comes into
contact with cool surfaces.
These areas are in danger of
unhealthy mould growth.
|
|
|
|
Where
does the moisture come from.
- Each person
produces about 1.5 litres of water a day whilst breathing.
- About 500ml of
water is introduced into the home during a 10 minute shower.
- Boiling
kettles.
- Cooking and
baking.
- Drying washing.
|
Why Trickle Ventilation?
-
Controllable
passive ventilation will assist in the removal of
water vapour, and other pollutants, from the air
without significantly affecting the internal
temperature. The removal of water vapour will
reduce the incidence of condensation.
-
Security
of the dwelling is not compromised in any way. The
trickle ventilators can be left open during the
night, or all day even if the occupant leaves the
premises.

TRICKLE VENTS ARE AN
ECONOMIC SOLUTION TO YOUR VENTILATION PROBLEMS.
OUTSIDE AIR IS GENERALLY DRYER THAN THE AIR IN YOUR HOME. A FREE FLOW OF AIR
INTO YOUR HOME BUT AVOIDING LARGE AMOUNTS OF HEAT LOSS AND DRAUGHTS IS AN
ECONOMIC SOLUTION.
OPENING A WINDOW IS NOT ALWAYS A
SECURE OPTION. TITON®
TRICKLE VENTS GIVE SECURITY AND VENTILATION AT THE SAME TIME.
YOUR HOME WILL NO LONGER BE STUFFY AFTER A HOLIDAY.
|
Trickle ventilation was
invented in Scandinavia and has been tested by Titon over many
years. Major building research bodies and energy efficiency
programmes advocate the need for background ventilation. |
